Samsung has upgraded its SmartSSD which processes data directly, thereby minimising data transfers between the CPU, GPU and RAM.
The SmartSSD uses Xilinx Versal Adaptive SoCs to integrate the storage and processing functions in data centres.
This technology can avoid the bottlenecks when moving data between storage devices and CPUs, improving system performance and energy efficiency.
Leveraging software and IP developed by customers, along with in-built Arm cores, the SmartSSD enables much more efficient data processing.
Compared to conventional data centre solid-state drives, processing time for scan-heavy database queries can be slashed by over 50%, energy consumption by up to 70% and CPU utilisation by up to 97%.
Samsung is trying to standardise SmartSSD technology through collaboration with the Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA) and with NVM Express.
